Frequently Asked Questions
What is a language enrichment play group?
Our play groups are small, supportive sessions led by a licensed speech-language pathologist. We use play-based, developmentally appropriate activities to support your child’s early communication, social interaction, and language skills.
What ages can attend?
Our playgroup is currently for children 18-months to 3 years old. If your child will be turning 18-months during the time of the series, they are welcome to join!
Do I attend the group with my child?
Yes! These are caregiver-child groups, and your participation is essential. We coach you in real time on how to support your child’s communication during play.
What does a session typicall look like?
Each session includes:
- A welcome routine
- Themed play-based activities (e.g., pretend play, sensory play, music)
- Language strategies modeled by the SLP
- A closing circle and take-home tips
My child isn't talking yet. Is this group a good fit?
Absolutely. Our groups are ideal for children who are just beginning to communicate or who may be using gestures, sounds, or a few words. All communication styles are welcomed and supported.
My child talks a lot. Will they benefit?
Yes! We meet each child where they are. Children who are speaking can still benefit from enriched vocabulary, social language modeling, and peer interaction.
What if my child has a speech or language delay?
Our play groups are a wonderful supplement to therapy or can serve as early support while you’re monitoring development. If more formal services are warranted, we’ll talk with you about next steps.
Will you assess or diagnose my child?
While the sessions are not diagnostic, the SLP teaching the class will observe your child and give individualized feedback. If your child may benefit from a speech and language evaluation, we can help you through that process.
Do we need to bring anything?
Just yourselves and anything your child needs to feel comfortable (e.g., a snack, water bottle). Also, the Tenn Little Birds Studio is a shoe free space so grippy socks are recommended! All materials are provided.
Do you offer drop-in sessions?
Yes! If you’d like to join us for a drop-in session, schedule it using our drop-in class scheduler.
What if we miss a session?
We understand that life happens! While we can’t offer refunds for missed sessions, each session is followed by an email containing the main resources shared during the class. Additionally, a bonus make-up class is sometimes added to the end of the series depending on studio and instructor availability.
I'm not sure if my child is ready for the group, can we chat first?
Yes! Please email Becca at [email protected], and she’d be happy to answer any questions you have.
Can we join if the semester has already begun?
Absolutely! If you join mid-semester, we will prorate your tuition. Families are welcome to join our Play and Say at any time throughout the session, and the website will automatically prorate tuition for the remaining weeks.
